Aiesec Mumbai's Cultural Preparatory Seminar

AIESEC is the largest student-run organization in the world. AIESEC has, each year since 1948, worked to fulfill their mission of developing young people to be individuals able to meet the challenges of our world, our countries and local communities.

International internships are the most intense learning experience AIESEC offers. Each year, globally, AIESEC, provides over 38,000 members the life-changing opportunity to live and work in a foreign country in the areas of management, technology, education and development.

For the past two months, AIESEC Mumbai has been running a summer campaign to send local students for international internships to any of the 110 countries in the AIESEC network. After a period of hectic marketing, information seminars and recruiting, AIESEC Mumbai finally found the perfect group of individuals to go for internships this summer and be proud ambassadors of their city and country.

Going on an international internship is an exciting, yet very challenging experience. And therefore, AIESEC Mumbai considers it essential to equip the Exchange Participants with the adequate knowledge and information required to survive by themselves in an unfamiliar country. Hence, the Outgoing Exchange department, with a lot of help with some enthusiastic new recruits, took it upon themselves to organize an informative Cultural Preparatory Seminar for all the Exchange Participants.

The Cultural Preparatory Seminar was held on the 4th of April, 2010 in St. Xavier's College, Mumbai. The event saw a coming together of local AIESEC members, excited to-be exchange participants, experienced exchange participants who have already been on internships, as well a few foreign AIESEC interns working in Mumbai. The aim of the Seminar was to have a proper expectation setting with the Exchange Participants, teach them how to deal with culture shock, prepare them for their job away from home, and most importantly, show them how to be the perfect brand ambassadors for their country. During the seminar, experienced Exchange Participants, who have already gone on AIESEC internships, shared their experiences with the newbies and told them the exciting as well as challenging aspects of living and working in a foreign country. This was followed by a talk by 3 international trainees (from Romania, Turkey and Poland) who are currently working with AIESEC Mumbai. They briefed the newbies on how to cope with life abroad and briefed them on the cultures in their own respective countries.

Apart from the sharing of personal experiences, the Seminar also conducted a session on how to deal with Culture shock. This activity was practical and interactive and was held by the international trainees, internship returnees as well as AIESEC members. Through fun games and interactive discussions, the to-be Exchange participants learned how to deal with culture shock in an alien country and how best to cope with such a situation. Throughout the Seminar, the newbies were also taught local Indian jives (which are special AIESEC line dances) and AIESEC India roll-calls. They were taught how to integrate themselves into the AIESEC culture of the country they would visit as well as how to showcase the Indian AIESEC culture in that country.

At the end of the three hour long Cultural Preparatory Seminar, the new Exchange Participants were well-equipped to deal with the challenge of working and living in a foreign country. They were confident of being wonderful Brand Ambassadors of their own country and the excitement on their faces was evident. The Cultural Preparatory Seminar hosted by AIESEC Mumbai was the first one to be held in AIESEC India this year. Congratulations AIESEC Mumbai and here's wishing all the new Exchange Participants a wonderful international internship experience!
